Coherency Strain-Assisted Equilibrium Segregation at Heterophase Interfaces

چکیده
Theoretical work in the field of interfacial segregation is focused mainly on the sharp interface approach beginning with the Gibbs’ introduction of the dividing surface. In this paper a continuum approach to the problem of interfacial segregation, which deals with continuous distributions of quantities at interfaces, is developed. The current study concentrates on heterophase interfaces in alloys as opposed to grain boundaries or antiphase domain boundaries. The important effect of coherency strains is taken into account. The Gibbs adsorption theorem is discussed in the framework of a continuum approach. A comparison is made between the sharp (Gibbsian) and diffuse interface approaches.

Nanometer-scale solute segregation at heterophase interfaces and microstructural evolution of molybdenum nitride precipitates.
The interrelationship between coherency and solute segregation at metal/metal-nitride heterophase interfaces is studied on a subnanometer scale by both atom-probe field-ion and electron microscopies for molybdenum nitride precipitates in Fe-2 at% Mo-X, where X = 0.4 at% Sb or 0.5 at% Sn. Internal nitridation at 550 degrees C generates thin platelet-shaped molybdenum nitride precipitates, while ...

Precipitate/matrix heterophase interfaces are characterized with respect to atomic-scale local compositions in two a-Fe-based alloy systems by three-dimensional atom probe microscopy. The proximity histogram method is utilized for determining the compositions of the precipitates, the matrix phase and the Gibbsian interfacial excess of solute. Suitable methods to measure segregation in multicomp...

Three-dimensional atom-probe (3DAP) microscopy has been applied to the study of segregation at ceramic/metal (C/M) interfaces. In this article, results on the MgO/Cu(X) (where X = Ag or Sb) systems are summarized. Nanometer-size MgO precipitates with atomically clean and atomically sharp interfaces were prepared in these systems by internal oxidation. Segregation of the ternary component (Ag or...

Theoretical work in the field of interfacial segregation is mainly focused on the Gibbsian approach that uses the dividing surface construct. In this article a continuum approach to the problem of interfacial segregation in multicomponent hydrostatically compressed alloys is developed and the segregation at homophase and heterophase interfaces is considered on common grounds. The Gibbs adsorpti...
متن کاملSimultaneous segregation at coherent and semicoherent heterophase interfaces.
By employing a combination of three-dimensional atom-probe tomography and first-principles calculations, significant qualitative and quantitative differences in solute segregation at coherent and semicoherent interfaces bounding a single θ^{'} precipitate in an Al-Cu-based alloy are found. Qualitatively, localized segregation is observed at the semicoherent interface, whereas delocalized behavi...
